Beautiful Treasures Part 2: Gaining Understanding

If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 2:4-7

God wants us to know Him. He has always wanted this. He created us to have fellowship with Him and others. Fellowship is not just a gathering at church or a church function. True fellowship comes as we seek to understand who God is, who we are, and who others are. Each of those are beautiful treasures that will enrich our life.

Notice in the passage above that this gaining understanding is not sitting on the corner of a street and asking for a handout. The passage of Proverbs 2:1-6 is very specific in the process of gaining understanding. It takes work. But the exciting thing is that it is worth it! God equates seeking understanding as seeking out hidden treasures. If any of us knew that there was $1,000,000 of gold buried somewhere on our property, we would not hesitate to dig, blow up, and seek out through any means necessary to get that money.

This is how God is telling us to get understanding. Understanding is different than knowledge. It is important for us to recognize that having a bunch of facts running around inside our heads is not understanding. Being able to see how those facts can be used in our lives or in the lives of others to help and to edify is understanding. That is the secret. We can easily memorize facts, but knowing how to use them is practical. There is yet another aspect to this, wisdom. But we will talk about that tomorrow.

Another important insight to have is to see that God is the source of understanding. Even while we actively and earnestly pursue understanding, we must come humbly to the Teacher and ask Him to impart to us the understanding that will make us useful to Him and to others. That is when we will find ourselves with Beautiful Treasures that will fill our houses with precious and pleasant riches.

Blessings to you!
