Even When I Can't See

Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. Genesis 28:16.

Sometimes I look back on my 25 years in ministry and come to the conclusion that I have failed. And yet I can also look back at certain moments when God undoubtably showed up and I see success.

As we have been talking about the providence of God this week, something has stirred in my mind: the realization of how faithful He is to be with us even when we can't see Him.

Over these 25 years there have been times that what I hoped for - or even feared - has kept me from seeing what God was doing right before my very eyes. The truth is that God is at work during the times that we don't see Him just as faithfully as when He is clearly evident.

In scripture, we see where someone may see the Lord and feel nothing in the moment (just as the two men on the road to Emmaus). And yet John wrote, "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though I were dead." Revelation 1:17

God has a way of showing up in multiple, unpredictable, and unprecedented ways. But I believe that we must learn to appreciate His presence in the times that we are not aware He is with us if we are to truly enjoy His presence when we are aware.

Taking the bad times (mostly associated with times that we do not see or feel His presence) with the good (usually when we are aware of His presence) is what builds faith. And what we associate as bad turns out to be good when we become willing to see the next thing that God wants us to learn.

"All things work together for them who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28.
