"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:1
Understanding Jesus is foundational to our lives. The timeline of history itself wraps around this One whose name is Jesus Christ--B.C (Before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini, Latin for "In the year of the Lord"). Who is this Man and why is He so important?
Some have said that He is a good man. Others have claimed that He was a prophet. The writer of the Gospel of John tells us plainly why he writes such things about Jesus. "But these things are written so that you will believe that Jesus is the Christ, God's Son, and that believing, you will have life in his name." (John 20:31) As we take a close look at the Gospel of John this year, we must start building the foundation that is fundamental to those who claim to be Christians--Christ followers.
This foundational truth is that He is nothing less than God. He can't be just a good man for He Himself will make the claim: "I and My Father are One." (John 10:33). He will say yet again, "Before Abraham was, I AM." (John 8:48) The writer of the Gospel states He was "In the Beginning". In other words, He is the One outside of Time itself--Eternal. He was the Word.
Here, the Apostle John uses a Greek phrase which was used by the philosophers to describe the "divine reason ... in the cosmos, ordering it and giving it form and meaning". He was with God--the Son of God had an eternal relationship with The Father.
Lastly, He was God. Here is our foundation that cannot be shaken. A good man can be wrong. A prophet may fail. But this One is the One who cannot be wrong or fail, He is the One--the One upon whom we can lay all our hopes and dreams. He is the the only foundation for life, for He is Him!
