John 5 Part 5: An Unbreakable Witness

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

John 5:39

The Bible is a book about God's plan of salvation. That plan of salvation is revealed in Jesus Christ. Therefore the Bible is about Jesus Christ from Genesis to Revelation.

We are looking at the claims that Jesus made in John 5. As we examine these claims, we must make a decision that Jesus is either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord of All. Jesus claimed to be equal with the Father in nature, in authority, and in power. He then substantiated His claims by four witnesses: John the Baptist; His Miracles; God the Father; and the testimony of Scripture. Today we will look at the last testimony: Scripture.

There are over 350 prophesies found in the Old Testament about Jesus. Some of these were written thousands of years before Jesus ever came to earth. They were ALL fulfilled in Jesus! The chances of that happening by chance are literally impossible. Yet Jesus did it! Here are eight quick prophecies that Jesus fulfilled:

  1. Christ to be born in Bethlehem: (Micah 5:2) Fulfilled in Matthew 2:4-6

  2. Christ was to have someone prepare the way for Him: (Malachi 3:1) Fulfilled in John the Baptist (Mark 1:2-8)

  3. Christ to enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9) Fulfilled in Matthew 21:4-11

  4. Christ to be betrayed by a Friend: (Psalm 41:9) Fulfilled by Judas in Luke 22:21

  5. Christ to be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12) Fulfilled in Matthew 26:15

  6. 30 Pieces of silver used to buy a Potter's field: (Zechariah 11:13) Fulfilled in Matthew 27:3-10

  7. Jesus kept silent at trial: (Isaiah 53:7) Fulfilled in Mark 14:60-61

  8. Christ crucified: (Psalm 22:16) Fulfilled in John 19:17-18

There are so many more! We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and the very authority of our lives. If you miss Jesus when you are reading the Bible, you have missed God's point. For everything that is written comes from Him and is about Him. That is exactly what Jesus told the religious leaders. "These are they that testify of Me." We can rejoice in this Unbreakable Witness that has stood the test of time and criticism. And in reading we can find out that Jesus in neither a liar nor a lunatic, but the Lord of All Creation, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Praise the Lord!
