If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
John 7:37
Water is truly wonderful. We drink it, we cook with it, we wash with it, and we play in it. Water is life and brings life. 71% of the earth's surface is made up of water. Our bodies are made up of 60% water. Throughout the world there are many celebrations that honor the water that gives life to the land and to us.
When Jesus said the words above, there was a water ceremony going on. It was a feast from the Old Testament called the Feast of Tabernacles. During this feast all of Israel would live in booths for seven days. On the last day of the feast there was a special ceremony to honor God's provision for the water that He had provided. The High Priest would carry a golden container filled with water through certain parts of the city. It was a huge event. There were trumpets and fanfare and singing.
That is when Jesus cries out with a loud voice the words above! Awkward! Here is one of those places again where we must say that Jesus is either crazy or he is Lord of all. He is making another claim that is incredible! To top it off, the next verse clarifies that Jesus is talking about people who believe in Him receiving the Holy Spirit. That is the living water. He is making some amazing claims that only God could make!
Jesus desires us to be filled--not with the things of the world that are passing away and will never satisfy. He wants us to be filled with Him! He truly wants to heal our brokenness and then He wants to use us to share the wonder and glory of who He is. If we have been changed. If we have been healed. If we have been redeemed from the hand of the enemy, then we have something wonderful and spectacular. We have His Spirit inside of us! And He wants us to be the people that give away what we have freely received--the water of life--Jesus.
Blessings to you!
